The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) gives parents, and students once they turn 18, rights over the student’s education records. American Classical Academy Rutherford follows FERPA and Tennessee law in handling those records.

Your rights

  • To see the records. You may inspect and review your child’s education records. Ask the office, and we will arrange access within 45 days.
  • To ask for a correction. If you believe a record is inaccurate or misleading, you may ask the school to amend it, and if we decline you may request a hearing.
  • To control disclosure. With limited exceptions set out in FERPA, the school will not disclose personally identifiable information from your child’s records without your written consent. One standing exception is disclosure to school officials with a legitimate educational interest.
  • To complain. You may file a complaint with the Student Privacy Policy Office, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue SW, Washington, DC 20202.

Directory information

FERPA allows a school to share certain limited information — described as “directory information” — without consent, unless a parent asks it not to. ACAR uses this for ordinary school life: a class list, a yearbook, a programme for a school event, a photograph in a school newsletter.

You may opt out. If you do not want your child’s directory information shared, tell the office in writing and we will record it. The categories ACAR designates as directory information, and the deadline for opting out each year, are set out in the دليل العائلة.

Military recruiters and higher education

Federal law requires schools serving secondary students to provide students’ names, addresses and telephone numbers to military recruiters and institutions of higher education on request, unless a parent or eligible student asks the school not to. The same written opt-out above covers this.
